Dogs Rescued From Mill Up For Adoption On L.I.

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (CBS) ― They survived disgusting and deplorable conditions, and now more than 100 dogs are up for adoption on Long Island. They were among the 1,000 animals rescued from a West Virginia puppy mill.

The 120 dogs on Long Island, mostly adult dachshunds, were taken from a vast breeding operation in Parkersburg, W. Va. and have since been cared for by The North Shore Animal League. Other dogs taken in include some cocker spaniels and three Chinese crested dogs that had been kept in cages and bred.

Prospective new owners have been arriving in hopes of giving a caring home to one of the pets.

"It's an opportunity to help the dogs and we'll give him a good home and we'll really love him," says Elaine Kilfoyle.

The shelter is hoping it can find homes for the dogs before the next crop of needy animals arrive, the result of hurricanes. North Shore will aid in rescuing hurricane victim dogs from areas affected in the south, according to North Shore's Devora Lynn.

"We have an emergency response team headed down south," she says.

The organization did the same three years ago during Katrina, when it transported 1,200 animals on two air transports and 44 ground transports, animals that might otherwise not have been cared for, or lost.

For the time being, it's dogs from West Virginia, ready to be adopted, turning a sad life into one of love and companionship.

With the dogs being vaccinated and spayed or neutered, North Shore Animal League charges an adoption fee of $200 for purebreds, less for mixed breeds.
