Push-In Robbery String Puts NYC Women On Edge
Suspect Posing As Deliveryman Terrorizing Women In West Village, Upper West Side
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Police are searching for a man wanted for a string of push-in robberies in Manhattan. Most of the attacks have taken place in the West Village, but one took place on the Upper West Side.
CBS 2 spoke with a Good Samaritan who chased the robber, as well as one of the terrified victims herself.
Elba Ordonez, one of the victims who saw the vicious robber face-to-face, thought a delivery man was at the door.
"He banged my head down, he put the knife to my neck," Ordonez said. "He tied me up, my body and my face."
Ordonez, who was not injured, lives in an apartment on Bank Street. A laptop and other possessions were taken. She helped police with a sketch of the suspect.
An 84-year-old woman, who also lives on Bank Street just three doors down from Ordonez was targeted as well, asked for a glass of water. As she complied, a cell phone and watch were stolen.
The latest robbery was more terrifying, occurring Monday afternoon in her building on West 12th Street, where surveillance video was shot. The building's porter noticed that one of the residents, a 79-year-old woman, had left her key in the door, and he heard a commotion inside.
"The guy was yelling at her, threatening her, so I turned the key and kicked the door in," porter John Alicea said.
Alicea says the man had the woman tied up on the floor inside. He chased the suspect, but lost him in the subway.
At a building on West 9th Street, a housekeeper was tied up. At a building on West 106th Street, police say the same man tied up on robbed two other women.
In the West Village, it's enough to inject fear into female residents.
"I'm frightened, I'm shocked, I'm appalled, I'm horrified," resident Jill Lynne said.
The suspect is said to be Hispanic, between 50 and 60 years old, approximately 5-foot-8, with a slim build.
Police say the suspect wore khakis for most of the attacks, posing as someone making deliveries.
