Four public beaches in Putnam County won't be open for the long holiday weekend due to high bacteria readings.
Putnam County health officials say the ban on using the beaches and swimming in the water would continue until the test results improve.
The beaches include North Beach and Singers Beach, both on Lake Peekskill, and Wildwood Knolls Beach and Northview Beach on Lake Oscawana.
Earlier this week, elevated bacteria levels -- known as fecal chloroform -- were discovered during routine tests made by Putnam County Health Department inspectors.
