30-Year-Old Queens Man Killed In Hit-And-Run

QUEENS (CBS) ― New York Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that allegedly struck and killed a 30-year-old Queens man and then fled the scene early Friday morning.

The name of the victim has not been released, as authorities are still in the process of notifying his family.

Officials said they are hoping any eyewitnesses to the accident come forward, as they so far have very little to go on.

It is believed the victim was crossing the street just after 3:30 a.m. when a vehicle, heading south on 149th Place, turned left onto Sanford Avenue and struck him.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the man lying dead in the street.

They have stated the vehicle was probably a large SUV or truck based on the size of the tire tracks it left.

Local residents, such as Joanna Jung, were stunned by the news of their neighbor's death.

"(It) gives me goose bumps," Jung said. "Oh my God, 3:30 in the morning?"

Peter Brent, who lives near the intersection where the crash occurred, said too many cars can be seen speeding through the residential area.

"The younger folk … they like to speed from one end (of the block) to the other," Brent said.

Police officials have also been scouring the neighborhood in hopes of finding witnesses.

"I was woken up by the police car," said local Soofatt Chen. "The police asked me did I hear or see anything. If I did, I would report that to the police. I feel very sorry but I can't do anything for them."
