Bizarre Hit & Run In Queens Kills Gypsy Cabbie
QUEENS (CBS) ―
A bizarre sequence of events in Queens led to the death of a livery cab driver. According to police, an angry female passenger shoved the driver out of his car into oncoming traffic in Ozone Park.
"He was a very hard working man. He didn't interfere with anyone. He just went out there, tried to make a dollar to help his family," said Juliet Hunte, the wife of the deceased.
Hunte says her husband of 12 years, Winston Franks, made a living as a Gypsy cab driver. But Tuesday night, he never made it back to his Brooklyn home.
"I knew he was going to die. There was no way anyone could survive that," an unidentified witness told CBS 2.
Before the 56-year-old native of Granada died, he endured a terrible ordeal. According to police, Franks got into an argument with a female passenger, sitting in his front seat.
During the fight, police say, she shoved Franks out of his white Lincoln Town Car, while he was driving.
As he was out of the car, hanging onto his seatbelt for dear life, Franks was hit by another car.
The female passenger then hopped into the driver seat, grabbed the steering wheel and drove off.
"He may have picked up a fare as an unlicensed livery and there may have been an attempt to carjack or steal some money," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
