A baby boy left in the custody of a baby sitter somehow climbed into a bucket and drowned Monday morning.
EMS units responded to a call just before 11 at a home on 108th Street in Richmond Hill where a baby sitter took in children. An 11-month-old boy there had crawled face-first into a bucket of liquid.
Neighbors say the woman who runs the place came outside screaming.
"When I came outside I heard the baby fell into a bucket of water," said Angie Singh, who lives nearby.
The child was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived.
"They said he's not breathing, and then the firemen just ran with him," said neighbor Liz Rivero.
One neighbor said CPR was being performed on the child as he was taken from the house.
"I did see the child coming out with the fire department, running straight to the ambulance and took him away," said Bill Caceres.
The toddler was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The home had a sign in the window that said "Child Care All Day Every Day." Neighbors said the service had been in operation for two years.
The state Health Department, which regulates day care centers, said the operation, while unlicensed, appears to have been legal. Licensing is required when only more than two children are cared for. This appeared to be a baby-sitting service for only two children.
While the Administration for Children's Services is investigating, for now, officials are looking at the incident as a tragic accident.
So far, the victim's identity has not yet been released.
