Use Accessories To Revamp Your Summer Wardrobe
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Tired of your summer clothes from last year but on a serious budget? There are easy and creative ways to make your wardrobe look new for very little cash.
The little sack dress of the 1960's made a huge comeback last summer, but if you're sick of the sack this year, fashion experts recommend giving it a brand new look by cinching it.
"I like to say the belt is really the tie of the women's wardrobe," Susan Cernek, senior fashion and beauty editor at glamour.com, says.
From breaking out old belts and scarves to dusting off your high school jean jacket, everything you need to create this summer's hottest looks may already be in your closet.
"Everyone is kind of feeling like, 'maybe I don't want to make big purchases this year, are there things in my wardrobe that I can wear in new ways?' Cernek says. "And there definitely are."
One way to start is by pairing an unusual belt with that same old dress.
"A lot of guys have five button-downs and 20 ties, and so it looks like they have a huge wardrobe," Cernek says. "The same thing can happen if you have a lot of belts.
"Take a wide ribbon and just put an old pin that you might have from your grandmother," Cernek says.
Another big trend this summer is the 1960's inspired tie-dye, which experts say is a cheap and easy way to add color to your wardrobe.
"You take an old white tank and grab rubber bands to make patterns," Cernek says. "Then you dip it in the dye."
If last summer's long, flowing maxi dress seems outdated this year, take it to new lengths by raising the hemline or adding a new dimension with a jacket.
"You take a really feminine dress and edgy jacket, and somehow the combo looks really fresh," Cernek says.
If you have room in your budget for only one new item this summer, fashion experts say it should be a pair of flat, studded sandals that can spice up any stale look.
