'Preppie Killer' Could Be Put Away For Rest Of His Life

New York's infamous "Preppie Killer" is back behind bars. Robert Chambers was arrested during a police raid on his East Side apartment on Monday night.

When the undercover cops came to arrest Chambers, he refused to open the door.

"They had to knock down the door," Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said. "They wouldn't open. Used battering ram, then he resisted arrest."

Chambers, now 41, was in the East 57th Street apartment he shares with his girlfriend, 39-year-old Shawn Kovell, also charged with selling drugs.

"It was as they say, open and notorious, and neighbors were upset," Morgenthau said.

Authorities say undercover police, over three months, made eight buys, totaling a half-pound of cocaine.

"There are videos of all these buys," Morgenthau said.

This isn't the first time Chambers has been in trouble over drugs. He was arrested in 2004 for misdemeanor heroin possession. He got 100 days in jail.

But the case that made Chambers a household name was a murder trial 19 years ago.

Back in 1988, Chambers pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the killing of 18-year-old Jennifer Levin during what he called rough sex in Central Park. He served the maximum, 15 years.

During the trial, a video surfaced showing Chambers popping the head off a doll and saying, "Oops, I killed her."

One of the women on the tape was Kovell, the girlfriend Monday night.

In court Tuesday, Judge Charles Solomon asked Chambers: "Do you have a lawyer?"

Chambers: "No."

Solomon: "Can you afford one?"

Chambers: "No."

Solomon: "Do you need medical attention?"

Chambers: "I don't know. I still don't even know what my arrest is for. I don't know the charges or anything."

If sentenced to the maximum on each count, and if they run consecutively, Chambers could be looking at 150 years in prison.

Chambers and Kovell are scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.
