Airliner Makes Emergency Landing Because Of Smoke

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) ― A United Airlines flight with 71 people on board made an emergency landing at the Rochester airport Wednesday because of smoke in the cockpit from a faulty air conditioning unit. No one was hurt.

Airport director David Damelio says the regional jet traveling from Chicago to Providence, R.I., landed safely at 10:20 a.m. Firefighters evacuated the 67 passengers and four crew.

The air conditioning unit was repaired and the flight looked set to resume later Wednesday.
