Wounded Officers Represent NYPD's Best & Brightest

Young Officer Sits In Grave Condition At Kings County

Kelly: Brazen Attackers Still At Large

by Brendan Keefe
BROOKLYN (CBS) ― The officers badly injured in Monday's shooting are the new face of the NYPD -- young, bright and energetic.

Herman Yan first put on the uniform in 2004. His partner, 23-year-old Russel Timoshenko, has been on the force only a year and a half. They worked together at Brooklyn's 71 Precinct.

On Monday night a police honor guard stood watch outside both officers' houses, protecting the homes of those who got shot protecting ours.

"I think it's terrible. Police are there to help us and protect us and then they get hurt on the job," one of Timoshenko's neighbors said.

Another neighbor added: "It doesn't make sense. How do you hurt another human being in cold blood like that? How do you decide?"

Despite their short time on the job, the partners had 51 arrests between them. And they weren't answering a call when they were shot -- randomly checking license plates while on patrol is classic police work. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a routine traffic stop.

Brain surgeons at Kings County Hospital have been working to save the life of Officer Timoshenko, who was shot in the face. He has two bullets lodged in the back of his skull.

Officer Yan was also shot twice -- one bullet struck the center of his chest -- but he's expected to make a full recovery.

"We have every reason to believe that his life was saved by his bullet proof vest," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call 1-800-577-TIPS or the Cop Shot Hotline at 1-800-COP-SHOT.
