The parents of a 7-year-old boy who died on an amusement park ride have tentatively settled their lawsuit against Westchester County for $1.25 million.
The New York county also agreed to set up a scholarship in his name.
The settlement was announced Monday in state Supreme Court in White Plains.
Robert and Elayne Cassara of Norwalk, Conn., had accused Westchester of negligence in the death of Jon-Kely (JOHN'-KELL'-ee) Cassara on Aug. 3, 2005. The county owns the park.
The boy was on Playland's Ye Old Mill ride, in which boats move gently in the dark through scenes populated by gnomes and trolls. He got out of his boat soon after the indoor ride started. He somehow ended up in its channel of water, dead from a blunt head injury.
Officials acknowledged that the ride was understaffed.
