Severe Thunderstorm, Flash Flood Warnings Issued
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for the entire CBS 2 viewing area until 9 p.m. Friday, and a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for most tri-state counties through Saturday morning.
Intense cloud to ground lightning and gusty winds up to 50 mph are expected with these storms. In addition, very heavy rain with rainfall rates of up to 2 inches an hour is occurring with these storms. This could cause ponding of water on roadways and minor flooding of poor drainage areas.
Lightning is one of natures number one killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter immediately.
Numerous showers and thunderstorms developed throughout the afternoon moving across northeast New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley, and the New York City Metro area, before lifting northeast into the evening hours.
Showers and thunderstorms will taper off from southeast to northeast by early morning. These showers and thunderstorms will bring 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches of rain across the tri-state with locally higher amounts in excess of 4 inches possible.
Rainfall of this magnitude will result in flooding due to excessive runoff from already saturated ground as well as flooding of urban and poor drainage areas.
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
