Road Rage? Man Shot While Driving On Saw Mill
Busy Highway Closed During Peak Of Evening Rush
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Was it road rage? That's the question police are trying to answer Friday morning, one day after a man was shot during Thursday's evening rush hour while driving on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
It was a traffic nightmare, as authorities shut down a stretch of the Saw Mill in both directions at around 6 p.m. at the height of the evening rush hour.
A peaceful commute turned frightening when his back window shattered suddenly and he realized he'd been struck with a bullet.
The victim was driving southbound on the parkway between the Eastview exit and the exit for Route 119 in Elmsford.
"He reported to us that his rear window had been broken, then he felt some pain in his back," said Westchester County Capt. John Hodges.
The victim, driving an Audi sedan, said he initially had no idea what hit him, but he realized that he needed help right away. He pulled off the parkway to a plaza where he asked someone to call 911.
"He discovered that his arm was bleeding. It appears as though there was a possible bullet wound to his back," Hodges said.
Police are now saying the victim, who is from Ossining, was shot in the shoulder.
Authorities searched the parkway for evidence as Elmsford police and a volunteer ambulance transported the man was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where he was treated for his injuries.
Without a clear motive so far, police say they cannot rule out the possibility of road rage. But according to the victim, he was not involved in any type of confrontation on the parkway.
