Suspect In NJ Shootout That Injured Tot Surrenders

NEWARK (CBS) ― A man accused of taking part in a Newark shootout that left a 4-year-old girl wounded has turned himself in to police.

Curtis Daniels surrendered Saturday morning at his attorney's office in Orange, one day after Newark police identified him as a suspect. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

Authorities say the 32-year-old city resident exited a car Tuesday afternoon and exchanged gunfire with another person outside an apartment complex. But it's not yet known whether Daniels fired the shot that hit the 4-year-old.

The girl, who suffered a bullet wound to her lower torso, remained hospitalized Saturday but is expected to fully recover.

Daniels' attorney, Sebastian Bio, disputes the police allegations and called his client a victim of mistaken identity.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker said Friday he visited the girl at University Hospital and that she is stabilized but faces a long recovery.

"I am frustrated and angry right now that a 4-year-old was shot in our city and it was entirely preventable," said Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

Daniels was released from prison in 2002 after serving less than six years of a 21-year sentence for manslaughter.

The first suspect, 26-year-old Rasheed Nelson, was arrested on Tuesday. He apparently checked himself into the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand. But McCarthy said it is still unclear whether Nelson's bullets struck the young victim.

Police say Nelson has at least eight prior arrests, and was even shot in the same area in 2008.

Authorities are still seeking other suspects in the shooting.
