NYC's Skinniest House For Sale...At No Small Price

75-1/2 Bedford Street, Just 8-Feet Wide & 40-Feet Long, Can Be Yours For $2.75 Million

By JOSH LANDIS, CBS 2 HD News
NEW YORK (CBS) ― These are lean times for real estate, so it's fitting that the city's skinniest house is up for sale. It's a slim house in a city of skyscrapers, but if you want to buy it, you'll need a fat wallet.

At a little over 8-feet wide and 40-feet long inside, it only needs half an address. Yes, 75-1/2 Bedford Street in the West Village is a sliver of the city's typical brownstone homes.

"It is not a cookie-cutter house," says Alex Nicholas of Corcoran Real Estate.

Actors Cary Grant and John Barrymore, along with a few famous writers are some of the residents who once lived in the tiny home, at least giving it a big history.

When you live in a house that's 8-feet wide, you have to be creative. Mirrors give you a good sense of space, appliances fit under the counter, but in a kitchen like this, where do you put the stove? The answer? Anywhere you can. In this case, it's mounted along the wall where a fireplace once sat.

"This was actually a fireplace and it was, again, it's about the utilization of space," says Nicholas.

That includes a refrigerator under the stairs – stairs that feel like ladders. And there's one bathroom for three floors. There are bright skylights for plenty of sunshine to fill the house, but something is missing: closets.

"There are no closets, that's right. If you put in closets, you take away some space," says Nicholas.

One of the things you'll have to consider if you move into the home is placement of furniture. CBS 2's Josh Landis is just under six-feet tall, but when he lays down across the floor – the wide way – he can actually touch both ends of the wall at the same time. It's something you'll want to keep in mind when picking out a bed.

The house comes with its own audience. It's in the city guide books and everyone has an opinion.

"Tiny's cute," says Red Hook resident Anna Solomon.

"Way too skinny with windows only in the front and the back. [It would] be too dark," says West Villager Susan Fila.

It's surprisingly light, thanks to wide open spaces in the back. But its selling point is passion, not practicality.

"It's one of those houses that someone's gonna walk in and say, 'I have to have this,'" says Nicholas.

Solomon says she'd love to, if she had the funding.

"Well if I could afford it, I would take that in a heartbeat," she says.

If it goes for the asking price – $2.75 million – a new twist on an old saying: You can never be too rich...or live in a house too skinny.

The house was built in the 1800s on a carriage path between two buildings.
