New 'Skinny Jeans' Flatten Tummies, Tighten Buns

NEW YORK (CBS) ― As a fashion staple, jeans are here to stay -- after all, they're part of an industry that generates almost $8 billion for women alone.

The quest for a great fit, for many, is an ongoing one. But it seems that now, the eternal question of, "Do these jeans make me look fat?" might finally have the definitive answer, as the latest technology for the "skinny" jean begins to hit the mass market.

Jeans are the most widely produced piece of apparel, and on average women wear them about four times a week.

"When I'm not dressed for work, I live in jeans," said denim-lover Ellen Power.

As far as ongoing fashion quests go, finding jeans with a good fit is at the top of the list.

"I would pay a lot of money for jeans that made me look skinny," said shopper Kelsey Goodwin.

Fashion technology has improved to the point where, later this summer, Levi Strauss will introduce jeans that claim to flatten the tummy and tighten the butt, and all for about $20.

"What would be a miracle jean, I would buy it in a New York minute," said Jenny Goodwin.

But there are jeans available at a higher price that have already risen to this challenge – called, appropriately enough, the "skinny jean."

There are jeans that are thigh-slimming, butt-lifting, lipo-not-needed pairs that make you look and feel great.

There are three basic things that companies are doing to produce these slimming jeans:

  • First, they are pulling exposed seams further in the front, to give the illusion of less surface area.
  • Then, they are using the fade to give the illusion that you are thinner in the areas that are faded.
  • Finally, in the back at the rear, they are using elastic technology to actually lift your rear end, to have a nicer shape in the backside.

This brand is in very high demand at boutiques, like Cantelope on the Upper East Side.

"They feel great, they fit great, they feel like you're wearing a girdle but it's much more comfortable than a girdle," said one customer.

When asked if she would purchase a pair, Rina Shalahov told CBS 2: "To make my butt look smaller, absolutely."

Added shopper Phyliss Frank: "If it looks good and it fits, I'd rather buy one really great pair."

Just about all of us like our rear ends looking good, and this helps all of us whether big or small, though there are some who still have their doubts.

"It's a deception, it's not real, because when you take it off, whatever is under there is gonna still be there," said a skeptic.

"The Skinny Jean" retails for about $178. Look for the Levis version in stores at the end of July.
