Want To Climb Liberty's Crown? Make A Reservation

CBS News Interactive: Sept. 11 And Since

NEW YORK (CBS) ― People eager to climb to the Statue of Liberty's crown can start calling Saturday for a reservation.

The National Park Service detailed the new reservation system Monday. The crown is set to open July 4 after being closed since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Starting at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday, would-be crown visitors can seek reservations through www.statuecruises.com or 877-523-9849. The Parks Service says reservations will be first-come, first-served.

Crown tickets will cost $3 above the regular admission charge, which is $12 for adults. Each customer can reserve up to four tickets and make only one reservation in any given six-month period.

For safety reasons, only 30 people per hour will be allowed up the crown's 168 narrow steps.

Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, Miss Liberty welcomes visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans traveling by ship. Officially titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," it was presented to the United States by the "people of France."
