Stepbrother Charged In Upstate NY Girl's Slaying

FULTON, N.Y. (AP) ― State police have charged a central New York man with strangling his 11-year-old stepsister in the family's house, which was filled with garbage and scores of cats.

Alan Jones was arraigned Tuesday on a second-degree murder charge in the Aug. 30 death of Erin Maxwell of Palermo. Authorities say she was strangled with a rope.

Police also charged the girl's father, 35-year-old Lindsey Maxwell, and stepmother, 53-year-old Lynn Maxwell, with child endangerment.

The 27-year-old Jones and the Maxwells held a news conference last week to proclaim their innocence, saying Erin accidentally hanged herself while playing.

Police who went to the Oswego County home found more than 100 cats and piles of garbage and cat feces.

Jones and the Maxwells pleaded not guilty.
