Stimulus Funds Being Used For LIRR Project
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Some money from the federal stimulus package is going to help the Long Island Railroad build new rail lines to the east side of Manhattan.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will receive $195.4 million for what is called the Eastside Access Project. The MTA is the parent organization of the LIRR.
The goal is to help jump-start the project, while also boosting the local economy.
Until now, LIRR trains have only stopped at Penn Station on Manhattan's West Side. New tunnels are being built that will give Long Island commuters access to Grand Central Terminal on the East Side.
The project is not expected to be completed until 2013.
The LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying an average of over 300,000 passengers each weekday on 735 daily trains.
