Police Give 'All Clear' At Stony Brook

Campus Put On High Alert After Reports Of Gunman Loose On Campus

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (CBS) ― Stony Brook University police said there was no immediate danger to students after a gunman was reportedly loose on the campus Monday afternoon.

Police alerted students shortly before 3 p.m. that they'd received a report that a man fled the Student Activity Center Cafeteria and displayed what appeared to be a handgun.

Police said the man ran in the direction of Harriman Hall on the campus and authorities scoured the area for the man, but did not find the suspect, described as a black man, about 25-years-old, wearing a black coat and a black wool hat.

The campus was not placed on lockdown, but police issued a warning for students to stay alert and proceed with caution, and to report anything suspicious to campus police.

A new alert giving the "all clear" was sent to students about 3:50.
