Stony Brook University has surpassed its fundraising goal in a seven-year campaign that ends this month.
The Long Island school has received gifts and pledges totaling nearly $360 million in its first capital campaign. The goal was $300 million.
In a statement released by the university, Gov. David Paterson called the fundraising success during harsh economic times "a cause for optimism."
The campaign officially ends on June 30.
The university ranks among the top 100 national universities in America and among the top 50 public national universities in the country, according to the 2008 U.S. News & World Report survey.
