L.I. Student Grazed By Bullet In Classroom
SOUTHOLD, N.Y. (AP) ―
A high school student sitting in a Long Island classroom on Thursday was grazed in the head by a bullet that went through a window.
Southold Town Police said the 18-year-old student suffered very minor injuries in the shooting at Mattituck High School just before 2 p.m.
Police Chief Carlisle Cochran Jr. said a 28-year-old Mattituck man, who lives near the school, was taken into custody for questioning about an hour after the shooting.
He said officers recovered a small caliber round inside the classroom. No weapon was recovered. Police have not released the man's identity, nor has he been charged with anything.
The high school, which declared a lock-down shortly after the shooting, is in a rural area on Long Island's eastern end, about 75 miles from New York City.
The student was released to her parents.
