Van Carrying Stuyvesant Athletes Overturns In Vt.

Accident Saturday Left 1 Student In Critical Condition

HARTFORD, Vt. (CBS/AP) ― A van carrying members of a New York school's girls' track team flipped over on a highway, critically injuring one student and leaving two other people hospitalized, officials said.

The van, taking the team from Stuyvesant High School to the Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, N.H., was northbound on Interstate 91 on Saturday when it veered onto a median and rolled over, Vermont State Police said. The road was dry at the time.

The van came to rest on its side, and passers-by rushed to it to hold it in place, preventing it from rolling over again. Four passengers crawled out, two were partially ejected, one was trapped behind the steering wheel and two others were inside, according to fire department officials who responded.

"The public was helping when I got there," said Sgt. Gerry Goguen, of the Vermont State Police. "It was a hectic scene."

One victim, a junior, was left paralyzed, police said. The girl, whose identity wasn't released, was taken by helicopter to a medical center in Lebanon, N.H.

Erin Taylor, the coach who was driving, was listed in fair condition at the hospital. Another student also was hospitalized.

Officials at New York's Department of Education said they were "hoping for the best."

"We are all waiting to hear the conditions," spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said.

The junior varsity team was to compete Sunday in the three-day meet at Dartmouth.

Dartmouth College spokesman Roland Adams sent his sympathies.
