Summer is officially about a month away. But New York City's parks commissioner has good news for people craving "fun in the sun."
Adrian Benepe says the beaches open for the season on Saturday. Swimming is allowed when lifeguards are on duty, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service predicts holiday-weekend sunshine, with temperatures in the 70s.
The city's beaches span a total of 14 miles, and attracted 14 million people last summer.
They include: Orchard Beach in the Bronx; Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn; Rockaway Beach in Queens; and Midland Beach, South Beach, and Wolfe's Pond Beach on Staten Island.
Benepe stresses the importance of safety, but adds: "Have fun at the beach!"
