Jersey City Math Teacher Accused Of Sexual Assault

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBS) ― A teacher at a Jersey City school is under arrest, charged with assaulting a teenage girl for more than three years.

He is a math teacher and soccer coach at the Hudson County School of Technology in Jersey City. But prosecutors says 44-year-old Gustavo Bordenabe, who has a teenage daughter of his own, has been charged with sexually a 16-year-old girl starting when she was just 13-years-old.

Sources say some of the assaults took place at Bordenabe's home in Point Pleasant and another location on Roberts Place.

"According to the complaint, it's alleged the defendant engaged in sexual contact with the victim, which included cellular phone text messaging and picture messaging between him and the victim, which included sexually explicit messages and nude photographs," said Michael Mohel, Deputy Chief of Investigations.

Investigators say the teenager's family contacted them. Officials say the victim is not a student at the school, where Bordenabe's wife is a secretary and his mother-in-law the principal.

"You can imagine the family is devastated," said Lee Bordenabe, the suspect's brother.

At the highly-regarded technical school, students say they're shocked.

"I don't believe it," said student Maya Daniels. "He was not that type of guy at all, not him."

Others say they'll wait to see what is made of the case.

"I personally don't think they're true but they should be given some thought," said student Saquae Domio.

Bordenabe, who has been a teacher at the school for close to six years, is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning. He has been suspended with pay from the school, but district officials say due to the serious nature of the charges they are seeking to suspend him without pay.

He is being held on $200,000 bail.
