Americans who want to say Happy New Year to a soldier can send a text message straight to Times Square.
"Operation New Year's Eve" charges cell phone customers 99 cents to send messages to soldiers overseas. Beginning Friday, the messages were being displayed on a video screen from the tallest building in Times Square.
"To all our troops abroad: I wish you a peaceful tour and a safe and speedy return home. Thanks for all you do. Bob (NYC)," read one of the messages. Soldiers can read the messages on the
www.operationnewyearseve.org Web site, created by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
The group joined with Sign Lab Media and The Durst Organization to broadcast the messages from Times Square.
"This is a profoundly simple yet powerful way for all Americans to connect with the men and women overseas," said Rob MacMillan, CEO of Sign Lab Media.
