There's a little shop with a big heart in Queens. It's a thrift shop where the bargains are a boon for the people who shop there, and their pets, which benefit from the profits.
Business is a good at the Bayside shop, cleverly called "The Worthy Pause." It's a tiny store filled to the brim with bargains shelves full of curios, collectibles, and cats.
"Henry" and "Oliver" were strays who reside at the store now, and that's' the very point of the shop. The cause for The Worthy Pause is to support animals and pet owners in need.
"We're an animal charity and everything we do, everything we sell, and the profits we make is for animal welfare" says owner Gertrude Barron.
That meant paying vet bills for an abandoned and injured dog that Delores Moore found. She rescues cats too, and gets financial help from the shop.
"Truthfully I couldn't do it on my own. My husband works and everything, but when you assume the responsibility for animals you have to realize if they need medical attention, you have to pay for it," says Moore.
Last year, The Worthy Pause paid various vet and pet food bills totaling more than $20,000. They also offer veterinary spay and neuter certificates for low or no cost to people like Christine Frascati who runs the SaveKitty Foundation.
"You just can't pick up every cat on the street and help it unless you have someone backing you up, and in this case, there is no other organization that helps like that," says Frascati.
Gladys Kusterer has rescued nearly two dozen stray cats with help from The Worthy Pause.
"My husband did the trapping and I carted them to the vets and back," says Kusterer.
And now she volunteers here too.
"Most people that come in have at least a dog, a cat, a bird and so it's animal talk and who does what for what and its a camaraderie," she adds.
A camaraderie that fills the kitty jar, makes use of donated food, or just goes shopping ...
The Worthy Pause has been around for about 15 years and has helped countless pets, owners and strays. For more information on The Worthy Pause,
