Police say the worker was pinned under the crane just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Chopper 2 HD was over the scene shortly afterwards, as police, firefighters and EMS responded to the accident.
Firefighters managed to pull the man's body from underneath the crane. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The accident occurred in the Bronx-bound lanes on the Queens side of the bridge, tying up traffic for miles.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority advised motorists to use the Bronx, Whitestone or RFK Bridges."
The northbound lanes were reopened to traffic after 12 p.m.
In July, a fire started by a worker's blowtorch shut down the bridge and caused significant damage. Some sections didn't reopen to heavy trucks until recent weeks.
