'Too Fat To Kill' Man Grilled By NJ Prosecutors
HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) ―
A Florida man who claims he was too fat to have killed his former son-in-law faces cross-examination by a New Jersey prosecutor Thursday.
Edward Ates, who took the stand in his own defense Wednesday, claims he didn't have the energy to accurately shoot Paul Duncsak and make a quick getaway.
The 62-year-old was 285 pounds when Duncsak was killed in 2006.
Duncsak and Ates' daughter were involved in a bitter custody dispute after their divorce.
Prosecutors claim Ates drove from Florida to Duncsak's home in Ramsey and climbed a staircase to shoot the 40-year-old pharmaceutical executive.
A defense attorney says Ates' weight caused asthma, sleep apnea and other ailments.
