Electric bills in some of New York City's northwest suburbs are about to go up.

State utilities regulators have given power company Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc. the go-ahead to collect an additional $15.6 million annually from its 221,000 customers.

The company -- owned by Consolidated Edison Inc. -- says the hike will add $4.37 to the average household's monthly electric bill, bringing it to $118.67.

The increase approved by the state Public Service Commission on Wednesday applies only to the portion of electric bills covering the cost of delivering power. The cost of the power itself is determined separately and could also rise, depending on fuel prices.

Regulators say this was the first general increase in electricity delivery rates since 1993 for O&R.
