New Yorkers Everywhere United: We're Furious

Wall Street Mess Will Ultimately Be Paid For By The Little Guy; CBS 2 HD Spoke To Many Of Them Wednesday

NEW YORK (CBS) ― No matter who created this financial mess, it's looking very likely that we'll all have to contribute to getting it cleaned up. And as CBS 2 HD discovered on Wednesday, that fact is infuriating many.

The Wall Street mess ... the bailout talk ... this is one of those times that we found uptown and down, suburbs and city, lines of race and class and gender be darned: almost everyone spoke with one voice:

"I don't think we should jump into this so quickly because these guys who were supposed to be protecting us got us into this trouble," said Anne Mannix of the Upper West Side.

"That's their problem. We don't have enough here as it is," added Manny Alvarado of Sunset Park.

Said Kimberly McAnelly of Greenwich Village: "I don't think the taxpayers should have to pay, because we, you know, we're basically innocent. We're the small people in the whole thing."

Vahan Janjigian is the chief investment strategist for Forbes magazine.

"I think as upset and angry as they are now, I think they would even be more upset and angry if the government does nothing," Janjigian said. "If these companies go under, if we don't do this bailout, this means that all credit in the United States will be basically frozen."

It seems, intellectually, people know that Wall Street needs help, but in their hearts Nicole Pushkal, who has her own interior design business in Tuckahoe, says many of her customers in Westchester are Wall Street people, and ...

"I think everybody is very apprehensive, and scared about our future. We all are," Pushkal said.

Oh yeah: Uptown and down, people are angry.

Even the investment strategist from Forbes told CBS 2 HD: "People should be skeptical. After all, some of the smartest people in the country got us into this mess."
