NEW YORK (CBS) ― As the New Year makes itself at home in the Northeast, you certainly wouldn't now it as of late. Record warmth is taking place through the tri-state as an unseasonably warm air mass settles in. The calendars may read January, but New York City pedestrians are walking around comfortably in t-shirts, forgetting the winter dread, if only briefly.

Just when it seemed like winter's bite kicked into gear with wind chills in single digits last week, some unexpected mild air moved into the region and has made for a fantastic start to the work week. The warm front that passed through yesterday afternoon was packing a little more punch than anticipated , bringing temperatures a good 5 to 10 degrees warmer than initially expected. Available sunshine has been a huge factor warming the air and partly cloudy to mostly sunny conditions should help maintain the spring like temperatures through out the day into tomorrow.

"It's not quite June in January, but it's good enough for me," says CBS 2 HD Meteorologist John Elliott. "Our highs are reaching temperatures that are more common in the middle of April."

According to CBS 2 Meteorologist Elise Finch, theĀ temperatures are rising from a surgeĀ of warm air that's been able to push up the coast.

Clouds will advance into the tri-state area this evening. Commuters should know that although mainly dry conditions are expected during the overnight hours, a shower or two by day break as the atmosphere juices up is not completely out of the realm of possibilities. The overnight temperatures will remain quite mild given the daytime highs and the increasing cloud cover bottling in the warmth. Temperatures have thus far reached 68 degrees, breaking the previous record of 65. Lows should drop only to mid 50's, unseasonably warm for January.

As for Wednesday, showers will be the highlight as the cold front pushes through our area. It will be a bit gusty in the afternoon as well, but CBS 2's Lonnie Quinn expects the area to remain quite mild, with a potential high of 58 degrees.

This brief but enjoyable break should remind us of the first couple weeks in January 2007, too. A new record for Jan. 6 was set last year when the high reached 72 degrees in Central Park.

Barren trees or not, Central Park should be a beacon of activity this week as New Yorkers will most certainly take advantage of this brief spring visit. The mild air will continue through Wednesday, and then cool back down into the mid-40s by Thursday. More seasonal temperatures will then likely return by the weekend.
