Another member of a group of bottlenose dolphins that took up residence in two rivers near the Jersey Shore has been found dead.
Robert Schoelkopf, co-director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, says the animal was discovered late this morning in waters near the Route 36 bridge, which goes between Sea Bright and Highlands.
He said the adult dolphin, found near the Sea Bright side of the span, was about 8 feet long and weighed about 400 to 500 pounds.
It was being sent the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for a necropsy that Schoelkopf hoped would be performed tomorrow. But it could be delayed due to the holiday weekend.
The dolphin is the third among the original group of 15 that has died. They spent this summer and fall in the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers, waterways just north of Asbury Park.
