About 15 dolphins took a wrong turn from Sandy Hook Bay and wound up in two narrow rivers near the coast in July.

Just when it seemed that some of New Jersey's wayward dolphins were finally headed out to sea this weekend, they've returned to the Shrewsbury River.
Three of the five dolphins remaining in the river were spotted Saturday in Sandy Hook Bay, about 200 yards north of the Route 36 Bridge. However, officials said they crossed back under the bridge later in the day and returned to the river.
Bob Schoelkopf, co-director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, said it appears they were frightened by noise caused by construction work being done on the bridge.
He said four dolphins then tried to cross on Sunday, but also turned back, although it was not clear why.
Three of the original group of 16 dolphins that have called the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers home since June have since died.
The dolphins are at the center of a tug-of-war between federal wildlife officials -- who plan to leave them alone unless they appear to be in imminent danger -- and animal rescuers who want them either removed or coaxed out of the river and back out to sea.
