Periods Of Heavy Rain To Soak Most Of Tri-State

Flash Flood Watches Issued Across Tri-State

Rain Expected Off-And-On For Next 24-36 Hours

NEW YORK (CBS) ― If you were hoping for a relief from the summer heat, you'll be happy to know temperatures will struggle to reach 80 degrees on Wednesday, but the trade off are buckets of rain across the tri-state. So don't forget your umbrella and your rain clothes, it's going to be dark, gloomy and messy for the better part of two days.

CBS 2 Meteorologist John Elliot tells us about an energetic front that is settled above our area, dumping early morning rain, making for a tricky commute. The front, with areas of low pressure, is responsible for numerous flood advisories, flood watches and even severe thunderstorm warnings far to the north of New York City.

Elliot predicts 2 to 5 inches of rain to accumulate through the course of the day.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch in effect from noon on Wednesday through Thursday evening. The watch extends from portions of southern Connecticut to northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including the following areas:

Southern Connecticut, northern Fairfield, northern New Haven, southern Fairfield and southern New Haven.

In northeast New Jersey, Bergen, eastern Passaic, Essex, Hudson, Union and western Passaic.

In southeast New York, Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn) Nassau, New York (Manhattan) northern Westchester, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond (Staten Island) Rockland and southern Westchester.

A slow moving cold front approaching the area will provide a focus for the development of numerous showers and thunderstorms from this afternoon through Thursday evening. Showers and thunderstorms repeatedly moving over the same areas could produce torrential rainfall... with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible.

Total rainfall of 3 to 4 inches is expected, with localized amounts in excess of 6 inches, especially in and near the higher elevations north and west of New York City. Rainfall of this magnitude could cause flash flooding of small streams and urban and poor drainage spots within the watch area, as well as sharp rises on some larger streams and rivers.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
