Nassau Co. Reschedules West Nile Spraying
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) ―
Nassau County officials have rescheduled plans for aerial spraying against the West Nile virus.
Health Department spokeswoman Cynthia Brown says last week's spraying was postponed because winds gusted above 10 mph. She says the county now anticipates spraying will resume around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Three recent deaths in the Long Island county may be linked to West Nile, a mosquito-borne infection that can cause serious illness or death.
Officials say 11 infections have been reported in the county this year. Two cases were reported in 2007.
The spraying begins at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. Brown says individuals, especially pregnant women and children, should remain inside during the spraying and for about 30 minutes afterward.
