NYC Considering Blocking Chatty Cabbies' Phones

TLC May Rein In Loud Drivers With Cell-Phone Blockers

WiFi, E-Mail Receipts? 'Taxi Of The Future' In Your Hands

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Consider it Christmas in a cab!

The Taxi and Limousine Commission wants your suggestions on how to make your taxi ride run smoother.

New York City taxi rides sure aren't what they used to be.

"I really think the cabs in New York have improved tremendously," said Carole Savag of East Brunswick, N.J.

"I think they do a great job. I'm a big fan," added Lou Hery of Morristown, N.J.

All taxis are fitted with touch screen monitors, and the option to pay with a credit/debit card. But soon cabs may be getting a tech tune-up. The TLC is asking for public suggestions to improve taxi technology.

"Wi-Fi would be great," one person said.

"I think if you don't have cash, a MetroCard would make the ride a lot easier," added Jon Levine of SoHo.

"I think the credit card is great because I never have cash," Marie Peters of Canarsie.

The TLC is considering pre-paid debit or taxi-specific credit card accounts, Wi-Fi, games and even iPod or mp3 plug in capability, plus safety improvements, like front seat cell phone blocking to prevent drivers from talking on their cell phones while driving.

Tell Us Your Thoughts: Should The City Block Cabbies From Using The Phone?

"They shouldn't be having these conversations, particularly driving in the city. You really need to pay attention to your cab," Savag said.

Taxi driver Ahmed Rahim defended the practice.

"Sometimes you have an emergency. You have a family in the home. Sometimes you have something wrong and go back home. If you don't have a phone, how can they get you? It's not right," Rahim said.

The TLC said its phone blocking system would allow drivers to make emergency calls. Drivers may also get navigation systems, and monitors to pinpoint traffic problems, restrooms, gas stations and relief stands.

The Commission said suggestions from riders and drivers will be explored.

New Yorkers have some interesting ideas, including "fresher air," because "They're so sweltering hot and stinky."

To which Rahim quipped, "How about a disco ball. Hahaha, we don't want that thing," he said.

"What you could add to a cab … a glass of wine," said another New Yorker.

So if there's anything you can think of to improve your cruise in a cab, the TLC will be taking in all your ideas until June 15.

The TLC is accepting suggestions on their Web site, or you can call 3-1-1.
