High winds gusting up to 45 mph caused delays Thursday for travelers heading to New York City area airports on the first day of spring.
The wind and recent heavy rains also may have led to a fatal accident when a tree fell on a moving car in northern Westchester County, police said.
Flights destined for La Guardia Airport experienced average delays of 2 hours, 19 minutes, while flights heading for Newark Liberty International Airport ran 2 hours, 17 minutes late. At Kennedy Airport, the arrival delays were averaging around 1 hour, 40 minutes. General delays, both for arriving and departing flights, at both airports were about 15 minutes.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the New York City area until 10 p.m.
In the Westchester accident, state police in Cortlandt said a man driving a Mercedes sedan was killed around 10:30 a.m. when a large tree fell across the road and struck the car in Montrose. Two children in the car were described as alert and talking with firefighters.
Police said recent heavy rains may have loosened the tree roots, allowing high winds to topple it.
Thursday's forecast called for winds of 20 to 30 mph, gusting up to 45 mph; temperatures around 50 degrees with mostly sunny skies; and a 20 percent chance of rain.
