Woman Killed, Son Injured In Hit-And-Run Accident

CAROLYN COSTELLO, CBS 2
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Police are looking for a driver Saturday night who took off after doing the unthinkable – striking and killing a Long Island mother and injuring her young son.

The victims were hit from behind while crossing the street.

Friends and family say 29-year-old Victoria Cuadros was a kind woman and loving mother. Her life cut short by a hit-and-run driver at an Inwood intersection.

"She was a part of everybody," family friend Harold Monje said. "The whole family."

Cuadros was walking her 6-year-old son Nicholas home from school at about 5:30 a.m. Friday evening when police say an SUV hit the pair, running them over, and continued driving.

"I don't understand how you can leave a mother and son on the [ground]," Monje said. "You ran them over. What mind do you have?"

Police say Cuadros was crossing Morris avenue, her son by her side when the SUV turned off Doughty Boulevard when it struck the two pedestrians.

"She was knocked to the ground, struck by the vehicle and rolled over by the vehicle," Lt. Det. Kevin Smith, of the Nassau County Police Department, said.

Cynthia Adams was one of several witnesses who called 9-1-1.

"We thought she was gonna make it, we did, because she was talking," Adams said.

Caudros was airlifted to Nass University Medical Center, where she later died. Her son has minor injuries to his leg and has not yet been told his mother was killed.

"It's a bad intersection," Peter Iten, a local business owner, said. "It's unfortunate someone had to die. Now maybe they'll do something about it."

People who live and work in the community say the tragedy could have been prevented with a traffic light at this intersection.

Meanwhile, police are looking for a very clean, maroon or brown Chevrolet or GMC SUV with dark tinted windows, chrome wheels, and oversized tires.
