Child Sex Predator On The Loose In Queens

QUEENS (CBS) ― Police are searching for a sexual predator on the loose in Queens after a 6-year-old girl was attacked Thursday night.

The victim was playing in a Woodside playground with her aunt when, according to police, a stranger lured her away and assaulted her sexually.

The suspect is still on the loose.

Residents in Woodside were shocked by the news.

"I can't believe it. But there are a lot of derelicts that hang out in the bushes over here at night sometimes. I think it's a terrible thing, a scary, scary thing," one resident said. "There are lots of people around. But if someone doesn't yell and scream, kids have to be taught don't talk to people you don't know."

There's a sign at the front entrance banning adults from entering the playground without the company of a child, and the playground, surrounded by two schools and several apartment buildings, sits in an open area. Still, the playground rests in a large park, and it contains several wooded isolated areas where a predator could easily take advantage of a young child.

"It's very scary to know there's this man is walking around," said Woodside resident Jennifer Jimenez. "He's an animal. And he needs to be caught."

The suspect is described as a dark-skinned male, 25-35 years old, 5-foot-11, with a thin build and black hair. He was wearing a backpack with black and grey stripes and sneakers with green trim.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
