A 26-year-old student in the Yale School of Drama has died in an accident while unloading theatrical plywood from a truck.
Yale University spokesman Thomas Conway says the accident occurred Sunday outside the Yale Repertory Theater and the student was from Indonesia.
"The family of the student was notified today by (Drama School) Dean James Bundy," Conroy said Sunday. "A member of the family will be traveling to New Haven."
Conroy said the accident occurred while drama students were unloading materials from a truck, but did not involve another vehicle striking the student.
He said the student was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The student's name has not been released.
Robert Kowalski, area director of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said the materials were sheets of plywood.
"The materials were secured to the side of the tractor trailer," Kowalski said. "They fell over on their side and pinned him against the other side of the tractor trailer."
OSHA conducted a preliminary investigation, but determined it does not have jurisdiction because the incident did not involve an employer-employee relationship, Kowalski said.
