Heavy Rains Batter Tri-State, Some Areas Flooded

Rain To Continue Until Sunday Morning

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Ferocious thunderstorms thrashed the New York City area, swamping some highways, backing up airline traffic and knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses.

Consolidated Edison says more than 3,300 homes and businesses are without electricity across New York City and Westchester County. The Long Island Power Authority is reporting scattered outages.

The day started off with mostly sunny skies, but courtesy of a cold front west of our area, clouds began rolling in, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the tri-state later in the day.

Additional rainfall will continue throughout the tri-state until early Sunday morning. The rainfall will be generally light with some moderate rainfall possible Staten Island, Brooklyn, and southern Queens. Additional flooding is not expected with this rainfall, which is why the earlier Flash Flood warning for New York City and surrounding areas has been allowed to expire.

Radar estimates indicate that over an inch of rain has fallen across portions of New York City, with more on the way. Multiple clusters of thunderstorms will continue to track across northern New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley. An inch or two of additional rain is likely.

If you are in an area at risk of flooding move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.

Reports of partially blocked roads have been received. This can quickly become water deep enough to float your vehicle. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway.

The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice - turn around, don't drown.

Heavy rainfall is possible Sunday morning, mainly east of the Hudson Valley. This rain may lead to additional urban and small stream flooding. Additional heavy rainfall is possible Monday night.
