Crews Scramble To Restore Power After Storm
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Hundreds of Con Ed customers in Queens, Brooklyn and Westchester were still without Sunday after severe storms downed power lines the night before.
There were 291 Con Ed customers without power in Westchester as of Sunday afternoon. Almost half of those were in Rye.
There were 167 customers without power in Queens and 98 in Brooklyn.
Con Ed estimates power will be restored by 9 p.m.
The Long Island Power Authority says just 97 of its customers are without power, 58 of them in Hempstead.
Ferocious thunderstorms briefly knocked out Nassau County's 911 system on Saturday and swamped highways around the New York City metro area.
"Amazing wall of wind, hail and rain - it just came by. We ran around closing windows. People were panicking; it was just unbelievable. Never saw anything like it. We looked outside there were trees falling all over," said Forest Hills resident Richard Karsten.
One of the trees fell on Rob Rossi's Volvo. "I can't tell what the condition is right now. There is a big tree on it. There are two big trees on it actually."
Firefighters sawed and chopped to free the car and get 75th Avenue unblocked.
On nearby Metropolitan Avenue, cars made waves as flood waters came up.
And at Jones Beach the REM Modest Mouse concert was given an imprompto intermission by mother nature. The theatre was evacuated for almost two hours and the amphitheater was struck by lightning.
Fans that had huddled for shelter came back when the storm passed and the concert resumed.
And at Saturday night's Mets game, players took advantage of the heavy rain and turned Shea field into a slip-and-slide.
