CBS station WCBS-TV in New York City has learned that a military rocket launcher discovered on the lawn of a Jersey City, N.J. home earlier this month has been traced by investigators to a U.S. Marine.
The U.S. Army says the AT-4, an anti-tank device which can be used only once, was traced to the marine, who then made himself available to local and federal authorities who were investigating the discovery.
The launcher which had already been used, was discovJersey City, New Jersey, rocket launcher, Newark International Airport, AT4 missile launcherered July 20 along a flight path to Newark Liberty International Airport on the lawn of Niranjana Besai.
Joe Quinn, one of Besai's neighbors, became alarmed and notified police after she had found the device.
"I got scared myself," Quinn told WCBS-TV. "It looked like a bazooka, and right away you think what does somebody want with something like that?"
Sources tell WCBS-TV that during questioning, the marine said he had thrown the launcher in the trash at his home and that someone had apparently taken it before leaving it on the lawn.
Jersey City police say no arrests have been made. The U.S. Marine Corps has not yet responded to WCBS-TV inquiries about whether the marine faces any disciplinary action.
