LAX Runway Mishap Forces Plane To Abort Landing

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― The pilot of a Delta Airlines jetliner about to land at Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday had to pull up when an Aeromexico jetliner entered the same runway without clearance, officials confirmed Thursday.

The preliminary investigation indicated that "pilot error" was the cause of the incident, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Runway 25-Right, according to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration.

Marshall Lowe of Los Angeles World Airports said the Delta jetliner, a Boeing 737, had been cleared for landing and the departing Aeromexico jetliner, an MD-80, had been cleared to go onto a taxiway.

The pilot of the Aeromexico jetliner then entered the runway prematurely, Lowe said.

The air-traffic controller saw what was happening at the same time as the automated anti-collision alarm sounded in the control tower, and the pilot of the landing aircraft -- which was about a half-mile away -- was instructed to pull up and "go around" again, Gregor said.
