For some, Sunday brings the ultimate climax of the 2008-2009 NFL season on the football field. For others, that game is just something filling time between the real show: the commercials.
Advertisers are trying a wide range of gimmicks for this year's game. Given the economic downturn and price of on-air advertising during the TV broadcast, Miller Brewing Co. is launching a series of
Miller High Life 1-second ads. In most of them, a beer delivery worker is shown in a company warehouse shouting quick slogans at the camera, such as "Beer's here."
Soft drink giant PepsiCo plans to continue its tradition of big-spending ad budgets with
a 3D commercial for its SoBe Life Water airing during halftime. Glasses to watch the 3D halftime ad are available at in-store displays around the U.S. Other Super Bowl spots are planned for the company's Pepsi, Gatorade and PepsiMax brands.
Financial services firm E*Trade, which won fans last year with its stock-trading baby commercials, is planning a return and is sharing
baby ad outtakes online via YouTube.
Not everyone is up to the big game this year. General Motors and FedEx pulled their TV ads, even though broadcast network NBC lowered the price. Playboy canceled its annual party. Almost 200 fewer media credentials were issued for the game.
"When I think of the NFL, I think of recession-proof," Cardinals lineman Elliot Vallejo told the Associated Press. "But that's not true anymore."
At least one potential advertiser won't be seen for another reason: NBC reportedly pulled the plug on
a Super Bowl ad sponsored by PETA (the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) over it's supposed "hypersexualized nature," reports CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.
The New York Times reported the pro-veggie commercials was rejected because it "depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards," according to NBC Universal's advertising standards executive, Victoria Morgan. The ad, which has the tagline "Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex," shows scantily-clad women getting "intimate" with vegetables.
