The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is endorsing Susan Rice as the next ambassador to the United Nations.
The committee approved her nomination by voice vote. The action paves way for her confirmation by the full Senate. A full Senate vote had not been immediately scheduled.
Rice is considered a shoo-in for the position. Once confirmed, she would become the first African American woman to assume the post and will report directly to President Barack Obama as a member of his cabinet.
Last week, Rice told the Senate committee she would work to strengthen the U.N. as "an indispensable if imperfect" institution.
