The air wasn't sweltering and simmering in the unusually cool July of 2009, but a bloodbath still engulfed the streets of Chicago, CBS station WBBM-TV reports.
As of July 30, at least 42 people had been shot and killed, and 183 more had been shot and wounded since July 1. Among the injured were a 9-year-old girl, an 8-year-old boy, a UPS driver who was on a break after making a delivery, and two Chicago police officers serving a drug warrant.

Chicago Police News Affairs Director Roderick Drew and Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue were not immediately available to comment on the violence.
The South and West sides bore the brunt of the violence. While Washington Park may be the site of a grand Olympic stadium that will place Chicago on the world map in a whole new way, this July the neighborhoods surrounding the park have been the site of 31 shootings.
A total of four people were killed and four more were injured in six shootings within a mile radius of the park in July. Broadening to a two-mile radius, the number increases to eight dead and 37 injured.
Chicago 2016 officials were not immediately available to discuss whether the International Olympic Committee had addressed the spate of violence that has rocked the city this month.
Among the high-profile shooting victims this month was UPS driver Danyle Samuels, who was shot and wounded on July 22 in the 6500 block of South Hermitage Avenue. Samuels had stopped his truck momentarily to pop into a convenience store and grab a bite to eat, when he was robbed and shot by two men. He was critically wounded.
James F. Thomas Jr., 19, and Shawn M. Scott, 18, were each charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and attempted armed robbery with a firearm in Samuels' shooting.
On July 16, two Chicago Police officers were shot and wounded as they served a narcotics search warrant near 112th Place and State Street. The officers entered the home through a back door wearing full body armor, when someone shot and them through a closed bedroom door.
Kenneth Green, 21, was later charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of possession of a controlled substance. His brother, Keith Green, 24, was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.
The officers, ages 45 and 34, were expected to recover fully.
On July 17, two boys, ages 15 and 17, were shot outside the gymnasium at St. Sabina Church, 1210 W. 78th Pl. In a fiery sermon afterward, the pastor of the church, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, warned gang members, "It's on."
Rashad Richardson, of the 7900 block of South Laflin Street, and a 16-year-old male were each charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a handgun in the case.
There were several especially bloody nights in the month of July. At least eight people were killed and almost two dozen others were wounded on July 4 and 5, four of whom died during a bloody six hours. Overnight July 28 and 29, at least 15 people were shot and wounded seven of them in a single incident at Homan Boulevard and Walnut Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
