A disbarred attorney who was accused by authorities of conning women out of more than $1 million pleaded guilty to a single charge of writing bad checks. He was sentenced to five years in prison.
Hillard Jay Quint, 42, was sentenced on Thursday. He had been accused of multiple counts of theft, misappropriating funds, writing bad checks and identity theft, the Cook County State's Attorney's office told CBS station WBBM-TV. He pleaded guilty to one count of a continuing financial crimes enterprise, which involved writing bogus checks worth several thousand dollars.
Online, Quint masqueraded as a wealthy executive named Matt Goldstein, and pretended to have it all a great job, a lot of money and a Hummer.
But Quint, police said, was actually a disbarred attorney from Georgia who preyed on female victims he found on Internet dating sites. One of those women Lauren Mendelsohn, told WBBM-TV last February from her Maryland home that says she gave him about $150,000.
"He was very, very charming, really seemed like a great guy, seemed very honest and successful and fun," she said by phone.
Quint told her he owned a successful business which allowed him to pay cash for expensive toys like his Hummer and a jet.
He told at least one Chicago woman the same story, but her Deerfield parents didn't buy it, and after investigating the man they knew as "Matt Goldstein," they called Deerfield police who found they were not the only ones looking for him. He was also wanted in Boston, Baltimore, New York City, and several parts of Georgia, Deerfield police said in February.
Quint was arrested in late February on charges out of Georgia.
