Ill. AG: Craigslist Dropping 'Erotic Services' Ads
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
The attorney general of Illinois says Craigslist is getting rid of its "erotic services" ads and will create a new adult category that will be reviewed by employees of the Web site.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office said Wednesday that existing erotic ads on Craigslist will expire in seven days.
Madigan and the attorneys general of Connecticut and Missouri met with Craigslist officials last week seeking an end to the ads that they contend are advertisements for illegal sexual activities.
Craigslist came under pressure to remove the ads after a medical student in Boston was charged with the April killing of a masseuse he met on the site.
Markoff, a second-year medical student at Boston University, was arrested April 20 on Interstate 95 while driving with his fiancee to Foxwoods Resorts Casino in Connecticut.
He was charged with the April 14 killing of Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old New York City resident who advertised on Craigslist, at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel, in the historic Back Bay district. He has also been charged in a robbery at a Boston hotel of another masseuse police say he met through the site.
They've previously said Markoff, 23, who is charged in Boston with killing the masseuse, was the suspect in the April 16 robbery attempt at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick.
Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
